Things to take

1. Pack Food. If you are traveling across the United States by train, you are going to want to pack some food. It is fun to eat with other passengers in the dining car, but it is expensive. The train often has a lounge. The food there is mega-unhealthy. It's like eating grease on crust. Your best bet is to pack a small cooler with sandwiches and other ready-to-eat meals.

2. If you need medicines, take them with you on board.

3. Bring Cash. There are no places on board to get cash, except by cashing a traveler's cheque, and so take enough money to last the journey. There are no ATMs on the train.

Planning a trip, train travel tips4. Pack a toothbrush for each member in carryon luggage.

5. Entertain Yourself. Bring a couple good books. They have chargers for cell phones, iPods and laptops. You'll be able to play with those gadgets. Don't be afraid to talk to the other folks on the train. They are just as bored as you. The observation car is a great way to see the country.

6. Bring headphones for mp3-player, CD player or iPod.

7. Wear Comfortable Clothing. You might be on that train for a few days. Pack some T-shirts and some sweatpants. You are going to be on that train for awhile, might as well feel as comfortable and as homey as possible.

8. If your trip will be lasting for several days, you can become very tired of your sitting position. It'll drive an active person crazy. On Amtrak, they have an observation lounge. It's fairly empty in the late evenings. We recommend you to stand up every hour to walk, to stretch your body. There are also stairs that divide the lower cars from the upper cars. Feel free to walk up and down those for exercise.

9. Store up your own soap, toilet paper, toothbrush and your own towel to feel yourself more confidence in the train or bus toilet room.

10. Bring a blanket and pillow if you think you'll need them. A blanket and pillow help you get a good night's sleep.
